Genetic characteristic: Hybrid of clones. Homogeneous, vigorous and rustic plants with good productivity and commercial quality. Darbella is adapted to nearly all types of soil acceptable for asparagus.
The plant: Earliness may be won when chilling requirements are fulfilled. Plant is vigorous with big volume of vegetation, with good tolerance to the foliage diseases during the first year of plantation. When chilling requirements are not reached, plant vigour is lower and the vegetation may be shorter for some time; then remains normal. During this period of time, plants should be protected against main foliage diseases. Darbella is susceptible to wind damages; increasing the number of plants/m2 will improve resistance. Poor sandy soil must be forbidden to avoid a lack of performance.
The spear: Very nice appearance. Asparagus are straight, with big calibre (80 to 85% of 16 mm with more than 50% up to 22 mm). It has closed tips of white colour skin without fibre and juicy flesh. Good quality in green.
The profitability: Density of plantation to optimize yield and commercial quality will be 16000 crowns/ha - 4 plants per linear meter for light soils with low organic matter level (<0.8%).
For light soils with organic matter up to 1.2% and in heavy soil use 18000 crowns/ha - 4.5 plants per linear meter. 20000 crowns/ha and more - 5 plants per linear meter for intensive crop with drip irrigation. High densities allow growers to increase yield with homogenous spears calibre and improve resistance of the plants against wind damages. High potential of production and harvest speed.
Technical advises: May be cultivated as an early variety (early row with thermic cover).
Under cold and rainy conditions during harvest, limited number of broken spears may appear. Global commercial quality stays high. May also be cultivated as a mid season variety (late row with black cover). In this scheme, Darbella can be associated with a very early variety such Darlise cultivated with thermic cover.
Darbella is a DARBONNE variety obtained by natural breeding
