Origin: Bred and registered by Darbonne - Inotalis. EU 10696. Mid season variety. Excellent commercial presentation. Thick calibre. Good adaptability to white or green asparagus. High quality asparagus. Tender texture.
Genetic characteristics: Clonal hybrid. Plants from this variety are very vigorous and homogeneous. Since they are also rustic they can be grown in any soil suitable for asparagus culture.
Plant: Dariana is a mid season variety. The plant is naturally vigorous, and the ramification grows high and allows air flow. Since it is quite ventilated and open vegetation, allowing good tolerance to main foliage diseases. Good adaptation to different climatic conditions. Not susceptible to wind damage. Dariana has shown in some cases (compressed and cold soils, excessive nitrogenous fertilization) some sensibility to spears bowing, somehow compensated by the productivity improvement compared to traditional varieties.
The asparagus: Spears with very good tip quality (very closed). Calibres are big, with a percentage of around 80% of 16 mm diameter or more. Bigger than 12mm calibres are observed in 95% of the harvest. Main calibre 16/22mm and 22/26mm*. Dariana’s spears have good quality taste and no fibres. High commercial yield. The tips quality of dariana is appreciated in green as well as in white varieties.
Profitability: This variety is easy to harvest and high speed of recollection. The yields obtained from this variety are very high.
Technical advice: Advised density for white asparagus should be under 20000 crowns per hectares. The plant characteristics make it possible for the grower to cover the bed with black plastic for white asparagus. Since the plant needs heat, growers should place the crown in soils which heat rapidly in spring; then ventilate the structure with meticulous work till the bed formation. Make sufficiently high beds. Thermic mulch recommended. Avoid excessive nitrogenous fertilization before bedding: do not overpass 120 units.
