Origin: Crossing between sel. n. 92-61 x 86-032. Selected in the experimental field of PLANASA in Cartaya (Huelva), Spain. Bred and registered by Planasa - Inotalis. EU 1.229 (7-7-03)
Plant: Mid vigorous and compact with intense green leaves not very dense in its crown. Good root system resistant to many soil pathogens that allows cultures in non fertile or non disinfected soils.
Flowers: Same level as foliage or slightly above it depending on culture cycle. It keeps unique peduncles in firsts flowerings. Very high quality of pollen.
Fruit: the fruits, of medium-large fruit calibre, are very attractive, of conical shape and bright red colour presenting a good apical pollination. Very little predisposition to chilling deformation or poor fecundation. There are not many achenes; they are placed levelled with surface. The skin during harvest season is brilliant red and it usually colours from apex to shoulders. Pulp is red, firm and aromatic with high sugar levels. Taste and flavour are intense with good balance of sugar and acidity. The fruit possesses good skin elasticity even after chilling with dense pulp that allows for long conservation periods.
Harvesting: It It is an early variety. Since it is not especially vigorous, it prefers early date plantations. Easy to harvest as fruit is well exposed beyond plant foliage on a compact plant.
Agronomical characteristics: Carmela* is an early and mid vigorous variety. The distance between plants should be around 22 - 25 cm for fresh plants. This variety keeps fruit homogeneity through the season, with good polinization in macro as well as micro tunnel. There are good calibres along the season without big size oscillations. Very productive, it has a good root system which regenerates easily and is well adapted to different type of soils and not very disinfected soils.
Due to its resistance to different diseases it is a good variety for integrated and biological strawberry cultures.
Carmela is a plant variety bred by PLANASA and protected by plant breeder’s rights.
