Variety: Macarena (98-110)
Origin: Crossing between sel. n. 94-44 X Sel. nº 88-033. Selected in the experimental field of PLANASA in Cartaya (Huelva), Spain. Bred and registered by Planasa - Inotalis. EU 1230 (7-7-03)
Plant: more vigorous than Chiflón, globose habit and dentate leaves, with intense green colour in the upper side. Good root system.
Flowers: levelled with foliage or slightly over it depending on type of culture. There are unique peduncles during first flower cycle. Very good pollen quality.
Fruit: fruit size is big, conical shape with good apex polinization. Usually not deformed, it can suffer from excessive cold or bad fecundation; it will then show small shape irregularities during the campaign. Achenes are not very many and are levelled with fruit surface. Bright red skin, less intense than Candonga, and very resistant to handling and transportation. Flesh is red, homogeneous and aromatic, with a high sugar level, and low acidity. There are good fruit sizes form the beginning until the end of the harvest with some size variations.
Harvesting: this is an early variety that will improve with early plantation, as long as the runner from the nursery is mature enough. Easy to harvest, since the fruit is well exposed out of the foliage level of the plant.
Agronomic Characteristics: Macarena is an early variety of medium – high vigour whose distances of plantation for fresh plants should be around 25 and 28 cm. This variety maintains good calibres along the campaign with good polinization results under macro as well as under micro tunnel. Very productive variety. It adapts well to different sorts of soils, although it needs good soil work and fertilization.
Macarena is a plant variety bred by PLANASA and protected by plant breeder’s rights.
