Sabina Wyant, technical manager at Tesco UK Produce, and Pablo Brocal, Tesco technical manager in Spain, have been visiting Planasa’s facilities in Huelva (Spain) to see our new blueberry varieties that will be launched next October 2019.

Once they visited the R&D trials, they joined a blind tasting of blueberries together with Planasa’s Sales and Marketing Manager for EMEA, Gonzalo Artés.

During the visit Sabina Wyant recognized that Tesco is looking for “flavour, shelf-life, size and appearance, but mainly flavour”, which is exactly what the new blueberry varieties from Planasa can deliver. In fact, the feedback provided by Tesco technical managers after the visit about the new blueberry varieties was very positive.

Sabina Wyant and Pablo Brocal also checked out the blackberry program that will be launched by 2020.

Blueberries features

Planasa is about to launch an ambitious blueberry program to produce plants of this berry, which has been tested since 2016. The investment in R&D have resulted into six excellent commercial varieties:

  • two ultra-early
  • three very early
  • and a mid-season variety

In addition, these varieties are characterized by having a shelf life of at least 24 days in cold storage.

Based in UK, Tesco is the third largest retailer in the world. They serve millions of customers every week in over 6,800 shops worldwide and on their online store.
